Fire damages Lilburn church

Firefighters believe electrical wires near an exhaust fan caused a fire late Sunday at a Lilburn church.

When crews arrived to the 4400 block of Lawrenceville Highway around 11:15 p.m., they found heavy smoke and fire in one of the rooms of the church, located in a two-story strip mall.

"Members of the church and other strip mall business owners attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers, but were unable to," Lt. Colin Rhoden said.

Rhoden said firefighters deployed firefighting hose lines and protected the exposures around and above the unit where the fire originated before two thorough searches were completed.

Although the fire was confined to one room with minor structural damage, smoke filled the church and surrounding units.

A Gwinnett County Arson Investigator was called to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the blaze, Rhoden said.

No one was injured.
