SUWANEE — The seventh installment of the Suwanee Performing Arts’ annual summer performance features a large green ogre.
The youth-led fundraiser for the organization will feature “Shrek: The Musical” and be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Town Center. Previous performances of Broadway in the Park have been “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hairspray,” “Footloose,” “Aladdin” and “High School Musical.” The production is put on by about 75 middle school and high school students, and a stage crew of about 12 people.
“We always try to pick something that will appeal to audiences of all ages,” director Patty Etherton said in a press release. “The writing for Shrek is so fresh and wonderful. I laughed out loud and smiled all the way through it.”
Before “Shrek,” an opening play will be “Shooby Doo,” an original musical mystery based on the popular cartoon “Scooby-Doo.”
The weekend of performances transforms the Town Center amphitheater into a Broadway stage with professional lightning, sound, costumes and sets.
Shrek ears and a dragon call, among other audience-participation items, will be sold. Tickets for a “swamp” area near the stage will be sold for $10 and available at 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
The production is free. Donations are requested.
