Norcross' Northrup commits to Georgia Southern

A second member of Norcross' defending state champion football team made a college decision.

Offensive lineman Ryan Northrup committed to Georgia Southern on Thursday while on a visit to the Statesboro school.

The 6-foot-3, 280-pound guard chose Georgia Southern over offers from Arkansas State, Charlotte, Georgia State, UMass and Mercer as well as interest from some Division I-BCS schools.

Northrup plans to graduate from Norcross, which went 15-0 to win the Class AAAAAA state title last year, in December and enroll at Georgia Southern. The Eagles are moving from Division I-FCS to Division I-BCS in 2014 and will play in the Sunbelt Conference. Northrup is the second Norcross player to make a college commitment, joining tight end Chris Herndon who is committed to Miami.

The Blue Devils, which open the season on Aug. 24 against Booker T. Washington (Fla.) on ESPN, are expected to have at least a dozen players sign college scholarships in February.
