LILBURN — Two people are in custody after a woman and 9- or 10-year-old girl were killed by a truck driver on Thursday evening as they walked on a sidewalk along Lawrenceville Highway.
Lilburn Police officers were dispatched to the alleged hit-and-run incident at 6:39 p.m. and found the unidentified woman and girl dead upon arrival, Capt. Thomas Bardugon said. The bodies were found just off the sidewalk in the yard of Calvary Baptist Church. Bardugon said the truck left the road and was on the sidewalk when it hit the pedestrians. Neither person had identification on them.
The driver of a white pickup truck was only identified as a man in his mid-40s, and a passenger was a female in her mid-20s. Bardugon said the truck continued about a quarter of a mile before witnesses convinced the driver to pull over near 5395 Lawrenceville Highway. The road was closed in both directions between Harbins Road and Inland Way for at least three hours, Bardugon said.
Because they were holding a small shopping bag, Bardugon said investigators believe the victims live near where the incident happened.
As part of the investigation, both people in the truck were in custody, but Bardugon said specific charges weren’t known yet.
“Charges are going to be against just the driver, unlesss there was something going on in the vehicle that helped contribute to the incident,” Bardugon said.
Lawrenceville Police and the Georgia State Patrol assisted with the investigation and directing traffic.
