GAB: Ceremony planned for canoe launch

DULUTH -- A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new canoe launch at Rogers Bridge Park in Duluth will be held Saturday. The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. and kid-friendly activities will continue until 2 p.m.

There will be free tubing for the first 25 guests who register at the event. Tubing is provided by Duluth $10.00 Tubing. There will also be free T-shirts for all guests while supplies last.

The canoe launch is a SPLOST-funded project.Operation One Voice is looking for help in building a Warrior Challenge Obstacle Course. Bill Stevens of Operation One Voice, which raises money for families of fallen or wounded members of Special Ops Forces, said all skill levels are welcome at the work days, scheduled for each Saturday through Aug. 3.

The Second Annual Special Ops Warrior Challenge 5K will be held Aug. 10 at Lake Lanier Islands. For more info on the race, go to www.operationonevoice.org.Morgan Polk of Snellville is one of 21 Georgia high school students who will receive a $500 scholarship for being a member of the first all-teen advisory commission on teen driving. The scholarships are funded by Ford, which developed the advisory commission in conjunction with the Governors Highway Safety Association.

"We couldn't be more thankful to Ford and GHSA for their recognition of these teens' hard work over the last nine months," said Governor's Office of Highway Safety Director Harris Blackwood. "It's a daunting task to figure out an effective way to get a safe driving message through to teens, but we went straight to the source and we're looking forward to implementing their recommendations."
