Peachtree Ridge's Wharton picks Clemson

SUWANEE -- Drew Wharton has wasted no time in securing his future in college baseball, as the rising Peachtree Ridge senior has given a verbal commitment to Clemson.

Wharton, who hit .316 with 11 RBIs and four stolen bases as the starting centefielder and recorded three saves with a 2.74 ERA and six strikeouts in 7 innings out of the bullpen for the Lions this spring, chose Clemson over similar offers from Tulane, Kennesaw State and College of Charleston, and plans to sign a scholarship with the Tigers during the early signing period in November.

Wharton, the son of John and Taryn Wharton, was particularly strong during Peachtree Ridge's Region 7-AAAAAA season, hitting .351 with a .415 on-base percentage and recording all three of his saves during region play to earn a spot on the All-Region team.

Wharton is the latest member of Gwinnett County's class of 2014 to make high-profile college commitments before their senior season, joining Parkview pitcher Mac Marshall (Georgia), Mill Creek shortstop Logan Moseley (Georgia) and South Gwinnett infielder Montrell Marshall (Auburn).
