Lawrenceville changes window sign ordinance

LAWRENCEVILLE -- In the next six months, the face of Lawrenceville will be changing, according to an ordinance approved Monday night by the City Council.

Previously, window and door signs in the city had been exempt from regulation, but the new regulation changes that, requiring that applicants for window signs must file a $25 application with the Planning and Zoning Board, and be placed on the council agenda for a decision on a special-use permit. One reason for the amendment: to limit the size of the signs.

"There is going to be a change in the culture of the city when it comes to window signs," Councilman Tony Powell said. "You should see changes in the signs in the city in the next six months."

The time frame for taking down signs not in compliance with city law is six months.

Meanwhile, door signs continue to be exempt from regulation as long as they are in the upper half of the door, and not bigger than three square feet.

In other business, the council:

-- Approved an Economic Development Ordinance, which sets the criteria for people to apply for an economic credit for bringing business into the city.

-- Raised the maximum for City Manager Robert P. Baroni to approve small purchases from $2,500 to $10,000, and increased the limit of $80,000 to $300,000 per month.

-- OK'd funding of $336,000 for Georgia Department of Transportation road resurfacing project.

-- Approved the following Consent Agenda items: changing the credit card processor for the Municipal Court to Priority Payment Systems; the purchase of six 2013 Dodge Chargers from Hayes Chrysler for $140,430; funding $8,450 for pistols for the Police Department; replacing meters for the Water Department ($174,000), Gas Department ($384,000) and Electrical Department ($40,000); having 13 trees removed from 641 Maplewood Drive; and using the Lawrenceville city lawn for the July 3 "Prelude to the 4th" fireworks.

One more piece of nonsense. Hand your signs from the ceiling behind the window. It will then not be in the window, but behind it. Don't these clowns have anything better to do?
