Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star in the movie 'Blended.'
BUFORD -- The Buford City Commission gave approval Monday for a Hollywood production company to begin location shooting here this month for a romantic comedy that will be released next spring.
The commission approved a special event application for Warner Brothers and Happy Madison Productions to begin shooting between July 15 and Aug. 15 for the film "Blended" which will star Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, according to production spokesman Robb Frank.
According to movieweb.com, the story centers on a man (Sandler) and woman (Barrymore) who, after a horrible blind date, find themselves stranded at a family resort with their children from previous marriages. The website says Joel McHale also stars in this comedy.
The movie is being shot on locations in Buford, Lawrenceville and Gainesville. Local extras will be hired for background shots through Tammy Smith Casting, Frank said. The film is scheduled for release in May 2014.
In other business, the commission:
-- Approved the purchase of 32 acres of land off Buford Highway for the construction of a little league baseball park and walking trails. The city Parks and Recreation Department was allocated $1.1 million to buy the property from the Walter T. Austin estate. The acreage is located across from Skate Country at 2700 Buford Highway and construction on the project will last 18 months.
-- Approved Aug. 28-30 as qualifying dates for the Nov. 5 election. There are two county commission seats and two school board seats open for election.
-- Held a public hearing for the city's FY 2014 operating budget. The 2014 operating budget has a surplus of $88.2 million which is down from $90.3 from the previous year, according to Commission Chairman Phillip Beard. He said the decrease in surplus was largely due to increased fuel costs for vehicles but noted that the city is still in "sound" financial shape.
-- Authorized the Chairman to sign the intergovernmental SPLOST agreement with Gwinnett County.
