NORCROSS — Gwinnett Police arrested a man late Wednesday night following a several hour standoff with members of the SWAT team.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith said Luis Samuel Lopez, 29, was taken into custody without incident after Lopez barricaded himself in his home at 1481 Reddington Lane in unincorporated Norcross.

The incident began at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when police were called, and the SWAT team was called at about 6:30 p.m. The initial call was a domestic situation between Lopez and an unidentified woman.

Smith said the woman was distraught when she called police and there was some physical contact between them.

Smith said the Lopez has outstanding warrants for terroristic threats and second degree cruelty to children. Additional charges are pending for the events on Wednesday night, Smith said.

The woman helped officers identify the man, explain the layout of the house and provided phone numbers to reach him, Smith said.

All domestic calls begin with two officers, but this incident escalated to a full activation of the SWAT team, which counts about 40 people, Smith said.

“The SWAT call essentially takes place as a precaution,” Smith said. “They’re the best unit to deal with a barricaded person.”
