Wesleyan could be going for a record-tying sixth straight state championship, but the Class AA girls title game is hardly going to a get a prime start time.
The same could be said about the Class AA boys championship, where Greater Atlanta Christian might be bidding for a third state title in four seasons.
With a record 14 championship games to fit in over just three days this year at the Macon Centreplex, the Georgia High School Association had a difficult task. But it certainly didn't do any favors to Class AA when dates and start times were posted this week.
The Class AA games will be played in the afternoon on Friday, March 8 -- the girls tipping off at 3 p.m. and the boys at 4:45 p.m. That means it won't be easy for fans to get there, whether they are coming from Gwinnett County or elsewhere.
Class AAAAAA, of course, got prime time on Saturday, March 9, with the girls title game at 7 p.m. and the boys at 8:45 p.m. After that, the GHSA spread out the games.
Class AAA, which includes Buford, will play at 3 and 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, so there certainly won't be any complaints from Wolves fans if their boys or girls teams advance.
The first games on March 9 involve the Class A private school championships at 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
After the Class AA title games on March 8, the Class AAAAA championships will be at 7 and 8:45 p.m.
The state championships -- all in Macon this year because of a scheduling conflict with the Arena at Gwinnett Center -- will begin on Thursday, March 7 with the Class A public championships at 3 and 4:45 p.m. The Class AAAA title games will follow at 7 and 8:45 p.m.
The state tournament begins on Feb. 19-20, with the second round Feb. 22-23 and the quarterfinals on Feb. 26-27. All of those games will be at school gyms.
The semifinals will be at neutral sites on March 1-2, with Class AAAAAA boys and girls at Georgia Tech on that Saturday. The Class AAA games will be the same day at Savannah State.
The Class AA games have been moved from Fort Valley State to Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville and will be played on Friday, March 1.
The Wesleyan girls, who won their last four state titles in Class A, can tie the record of six straight state championships set by the Hart County girls from 1989 through 1994 in Class AAA with a championship this year.
