Gwinnett's Champions Tour golf tourney releases early field

The Greater Gwinnett Championship, the county's new Champions Tour golf tourney, announced Tuesday the early commitments for the inaugural event, scheduled for April 15-21 at the TPC Sugarloaf.

Twenty-seven of the top 30 players from last year’s Champions Tour money list have committed to the tourney, including the winner of the season-opening event, John Cook. He will be joined at the Mitsubishi Electric Cooling and Heating-sponsored event by Bernhard Langer, Fred Funk, Roger Chapman, David Frost, Willie Wood and Michael Allen — all two-time winners on the Champions Tour in 2012.

Multiple Champions Tour winners Kenny Perry and Jay Don Blake, both runner-up finishers at TPC Sugarloaf during their respective PGA Tour careers, will also be in the field. World Golf Hall of Fame member Langer will be joined by fellow Hall of Fame members Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Larry Nelson and Sandy Lyle, all who have competed at TPC Sugarloaf during their illustrious PGA Tour careers.

"Like all my fellow Champions Tour professionals, I am very much looking forward to returning to the Atlanta area for the Greater Gwinnett Championship,” said Cook, who finished tied for 30th at TPC Sugarloaf in 2007 before joining the Champions Tour later that year. “Most of us played at TPC Sugarloaf at some stage during our PGA Tour days and the fans were always very supportive. We look forward to putting on a great show for them again."

The Greater Gwinnett Championship will benefit these local charities — Gwinnett Children's Shelter, Gwinnett Technical College, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia Gwinnett College and the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation.

“With this being the inaugural year, we are thrilled by the early list of Champions Tour professionals who have committed to play in our tournament,” said Stan Hall, executive director of the Greater Gwinnett Championship. “This clearly demonstrates the excitement of the professionals to be coming back to the metro Atlanta area.”
