ATLANTA -- After a two-month design contest, the Atlanta Silverbacks unveiled the club's new logo Wednesday at the Brewhouse Cafe in Little Five Points.
The new logo includes an interlocking "A" and "S" surrounded by a black circle featuring red stripes and the words "Atlanta Silverbacks." Also inside the circle is "FC," for football club, and the team's establishment date of 1998.
After the team launched a contest for a possible renaming that ended with Silverbacks beating Chiefs and Atlanta FC in November, the logo contest began. The winning design was by Ryan Foose, a native of Wisconsin. Thousands of votes were cast for the finalist choices, according to the team.
Fans of the gorilla in the club's old logo shouldn't be too upset. The gorilla, a nod to the Atlanta Zoo's famous Willie B., will live on, according to Silverbacks chairman Boris Jerkunica.
"The Silverback gorilla is at the core of who we are as a brand, so it would be inappropriate to completely push that aside," he said in a statement. "Like many brands, we're going to have a few secondary logos, and one of those will contain an image of a gorilla."
New merchandise and a new website at www.atlantasilverbacks.com will launch within the next month featuring the new logo.
