LAWRENCEVILLE -- While the Aurora Theatre's 17th season is well under way, the leaders at the venue want to recognize the hard work and passion put into its 16th season.
On Feb. 11, the Aurora hosts its third annual Barbara Awards, which gives awards to last season's actors with the most public votes for their past performances.
"Ann-Carol (Pence) and I try to make sure that the patrons, sponsors and artists who come here to share their talents feel appreciated," Aurora's Producing Artistic Director Anthony Rodriguez said. "The great party that board member Amanda Martin throws every year gives all of us a chance to show appreciation for each other."
This year the Lawrenceville theater is honoring Clyde and Sandra Strickland, who have supported the Aurora year after year.
"I call Sandra my angel. When we need help, she is a stalwart. When we need a hug, she gives that too," Pence said. "And Clyde is truly a man of God in the best sense. He works diligently to live his best life. He challenges Anthony and I to live our best lives, too. For that reason, we are better leaders and better human beings."
The Stricklands have been a part of the Gwinnett community for many years. In the past, they have given to the Gwinnett Medical Center, Hope Clinic, Rainbow Village, Gwinnett Historical Society, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity and the Central Gwinnett Cluster Foundation.
But the main reason the community is coming together is to celebrate the Aurora's 2011-12 season. Even if you cannot attend the soiree, the public can vote on their favorite performances: "A Chorus Line," "Clyde 'n Bonnie: A Folktale," "A Body of Water," "Grey Area," "Fox on the Fairway," "Christmas Canteen" and the three performances on the studio stage.
The night starts at 7 p.m. with a red carpet entrance and reception with food catered by Celebrate the Occasion, plus complimentary champagne. The awards ceremony kicks off at 8 p.m. with musical performances by Pence accompanied by her band and -- of course -- a night of awards.
A cash bar is available throughout the evening.
