ATLANTA -- U.S. Attorneys officials say a 38-year-old Atlanta man has been sentenced to 16 years and eight months in federal prison on cocaine trafficking charges.
Authorities Wednesday said Lincoln E. Son recruited Delta Airlines employees at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport to move suitcases filled with cocaine from baggage ramps and smuggle them off of airport property -- bypassing U.S. Customs and Inspection agents. It is unclear how many airline workers were involved or if they've been prosecuted.
Officials say Son, a native of the U.S. Virgin Islands, was a member of a Caribbean-based drug-trafficking operation. Authorities began investigating the man in February 2010.
Aside from serving prison time, Son is ordered to serve 5 years of supervised release. He was convicted on the charges after pleading guilty on Oct. 26, 2012.
