PREP ROUNDUP: Mustangs win 16-team wrestling tourney

MCDONOUGH -- Meadowcreek won the 16-team Last Man Standing wrestling tournament Saturday in McDonough. The Mustangs scored 133.5 points, had nine placers and narrowly edging out host Eagles Landing, which finished with 130.5.

Robert Nguyen (120) and Rene Deluna (132) were individual champions. Ryan Moore (182) and Mardal Hobley (195) placed second. Dewayne Harris (113), Jose Sanchez (126), Nihgee Eddington (138) and Ade Harden (145) placed third. Malik Saunders (106) finished fourth.

WRESTLING

Parkview's Shakur wins title

FAYETTEVILLE -- Khalil Shakur won the 160-pound title at the Wildcat Brawl wrestling tournament at Whitewater High School on Saturday.

Also placing for the Panthers were Andrew Webb (126) and Harrison Schmid (195), who finished fourth, and a trio of sixth place finishers which included Will Anderson (132), Ben Boatwright (170) and Alex Pham (182).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Archer 46, Starr's Mill 42

FAYETTEVILLE -- Archer's girls won a back-and-forth contest with host Starr's Mill 46-42 on Saturday afternoon at the Girls Night Out Showcase.

Madison Newby had a game-high 18 points for the Tigers (15-5) and also made two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the victory. Newby added six steals and three assists.

Kayla Rogers scored 17 and made five 3-pointers, while Alesha Mann contributed nine points.

Parkview 59, Milton 17

LILBURN -- Genesis Perrymond scored 15 points to help lift Parkview to a 59-17 win over Milton Saturday night. Parkview (19-0, 10-0) had 12 players score.

Wesleyan 69, Bradley Central (Tenn.) 61

FAYETTEVILLE -- Katie Frerking poured in 32 points to lead Wesleyan to a 69-61 victory over Bradley Central on Saturday night in the Girls Night Out Showcase for Cancer Awareness.

Frerking also added had eight rebounds and four steals. Brittany Stevens added 14 for the Wolves (15-4). The turning point of the game came late in the second quarter. With Wesleyan trailing, freshman Taylor Casey came into the game and scored nine points in two minutes to help cut the Central lead to two heading into halftime. Wesleyan continued its momentum in the second half and got the win over the Tennessee team.

Berkmar 67, Meadowcreek 50

NORCROSS -- Daijah Cooke was a one-person wrecking crew as Berkmar beat Meadowcreek 67-50 on Saturday night.

The senior guard scored 27 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, had seven steals and dished out five assists.

Courtney Fields led Meadowcreek with 21 points.

Brookwood 60, Rockdale 51

FAYETTEVILLE -- Brookwood improved to 11-9 with a 60-51 win over Rockdale County on Saturday night at the Girls Night Out Showcase for Cancer Awareness.

Courtney Gardner led the Broncos with 23 points and nine rebounds. Rebecca Walker had 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Taiylor Rinehart pulled down nine rebounds for Brookwood.

Cummings hits milestone

NORCROSS -- Greater Atlanta Christian standout Brianna Cummings hit the 1,000-point milestone for her career during Friday night's 63-32 victory over Lovett at the Long Forum.

Just a junior, Cummings scored a game-high 17 points in the Spartans' lopsided Region 6-AA victory.

The top college prospect is among the county leaders in both scoring (19.1) and rebounding (9.7).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Archer 57, Josey 56

AUGUSTA -- Archer's Nafis Floyd hit a free throw with .4 seconds left in the game to lift the Tigers to a 57-56 win over Josey in the William Avery Invitational on Saturday night.

Randall Smith scored 15 to lead the Tigers (16-4). Kelvin Nwanze and John Gillis added 14 and 11, respectively.

Buford 52, Xenia (Ohio) 50

DAYTON, Ohio -- Isaiah Williams scored 17 points to help Buford past Xenia 52-50 on Saturday in the Flyin to the Hoop Tournament.

Kyle Doyle added 13 and A.J. Davis scored nine points and had eight rebounds in the win.

Berkmar 76, Meadowcreek 68

NORCROSS -- Berkmar defeated Meadowcreek 76-68 on Saturday night. The Mustangs (6-13) were led by A.J. Hicks' 25 points. Austin Robinson scored 23 and Jonathan Jones added 10 for Meadowcreek.
