LAWRENCEVILLE -- Tommy Hughes has been elected as chairman of the Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation by its board of trustees. He succeeds John D. Stephens, who is retiring from his 18-month service in the position.
"Tommy is one of those individuals whose very name is synonymous with the Gwinnett region," said Renee Byrd Lewis, president of the GGC Foundation's board of trustees.
"This is an exciting time for the foundation as it now seeks to help GGC grow programmatically as it has recently grown in terms of facilities. We look forward to Tommy's enthusiastic leadership as we enter this new phase, which will help the college continue elevating its position regionally, nationally and internationally."
Born in Doraville and raised in Buford, Hughes was the youngest Buford city commissioner ever elected. During his 12-year tenure, he worked to improve education, serving as chairman of the board of Buford City Schools and overseeing the completion of the new Buford High School.
Hughes was elected in 1993 as Gwinnett County commissioner for District 1 and served until 2001. He served as a committee member that was instrumental in working with the University System of Georgia Board of Regents to secure a four-year college for Gwinnett County.
Hughes has also been a supporter of the Gwinnett Civic & Cultural Center, encouraging its development and expansion. His other civic duties include serving as a member of the boards of Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful, Buford Basketball Association and Gwinnett Hospital System, and chairman of the board for Gwinnett Convention & Visitors Bureau. He also is a graduate of Leadership Gwinnett and the Regional Leadership Institute.
Hughes currently serves on the boards of United Community Bank-Gwinnett, Gwinnett Convention & Visitors Bureau, Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Gwinnett College Trustees.
"The foundation is committed to ensuring that GGC has a healthy financial base to support its ongoing growth," Hughes said. "We've been very successful at providing for core infrastructure, and now we must focus on core funding needs, including endowment and support of the integrated educational experience."
