The Gwinnett County Board of Education honored former Gwinnett Chamber President and CEO Jim Maran Thursday with the Public Service Award.

SUWANEE -- Members of the Gwinnett County Board of Education thanked a man the superintendent heralded as a "champion of public education" Thursday night.

During its regular monthly meeting, the board of education presented former Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jim Maran with the district's prestigious Public Service Award.

Maran, who has served as president for nearly a decade, retired at the end of the year.

Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks thanked Maran "in recognition of his unwavering support during his tenure with the chamber."

Added Wilbanks: "From the day Mr. Maran took office, his interest in the school system has been readily apparent. Jim understood that economic development in any community is strictly tied to the educational opportunities available to its citizens."

Maran thanked the board for the recognition.

"The heartbeat of our community and economic development is Gwinnett County Public Schools," Maran said. "That's the belief I came with, and that's the belief I still have today. I'm appreciative. Thank you very much."

Maran was the second person to ever receive the district's Public Service Award.

Woody Woodruff, a longtime volunteer from the Parkview Cluster, has also received the accolade.

Hell, Wilbanks has given the C of C some of the money he forcibly took from us, the taxpayers. It's time the C of C gave us our money back and we threw Wilbanks out.

Great partnership between C of C and the BOE. That's why companies still want to locate here...and broaden our tax base, folks! It works for the good!
