PEACHTREE CORNERS — Heavy smoke and fire enveloped a popular barbeque restaurant on Wednesday virtually in the middle of the dinnertime rush.

Gwinnett firefighters were called to the Dreamland B-B-Q restaurant at 5250 Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners at 5:18 p.m. Gwinnett Fire Lt. Colin Rhoden said a manager who called 911 reported smoke in the attic of the restaurant, but employees and firefighters were unsure of the cause or origin of the blaze. A manager of the restaurant escorted several patrons out of the building, Rhoden said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which building owner Moe Majidi said was most important.

“I got here and I saw the smoke and flames and all the machines and people,” said Majidi, a Johns Creek resident who arrived shortly after the fire was under control at 6:07 p.m. “Fortunately, nobody got hurt. The next thing we have to be sure is that nobody can get in and out until it’s safe. After that, it’s up to the insurance companies.”

Majidi has owned the building since 1998, and Dreamland has leased it from him since March 2005. Majidi previously owned and operated Mario’s italian restaurant in the standalone building that sits at the front of a strip shopping center parking lot. Majidi said this is the first time he’s experienced a business fire.

Employees from Dreamland declined to comment. Dreamland is based in Alabama, but also has a location in Roswell.

Two hours after the fire was under control, Rhoden said firefighters couldn’t determine the extent of damage to the interior of the building because its structural integrity was compromised.

There was a gaping hole in the center of the roof, and one of the front walls was burned through.

Majidi said he suspected most of the commercial equipment, ceiling tile and sheet rock were destroyed by fire or water damage, but, “from the outside, it’s hard to determine.”

Kevin, do you EVER have anything worthwhile to say? A lot of people lost their livelihood due to this fire.
