LAWRENCEVILLE -- A local YMCA has named a new leader.

The J.M. Tull-Gwinnett YMCA on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville recently named Kim Nelson as its new executive director. Nelson, who had served since 2007 as the associate executive director of a YMCA facility in Alpharetta, brings 12 years of professional experience to the job.

The Suwanee resident began her YMCA career in 2000 at the Ed Isakson-Alpharetta Family YMCA, as the children's services director. She was eventually promoted to the lead children's services director -- overseeing 24 after-school sites and year-round camp programs -- and then senior program director.

"My focus will be opening doors and opportunities for all," Nelson said in a news release. "We will continue to make a positive impact on children, teens, adults and local neighborhoods served by the Tull-Gwinnett YMCA."

Nelson received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Elon College in North Carolina. She is a former board member of the Rotary Club of North Fulton, a graduate of the "Leadership North Fulton" program and was a local school advisory committee business member.

She and her family have lived in Gwinnett for 15 years.
