Barrow County to host 'Skywarn' class

WINDER -- Barrow County Emergency Services will host a class this month to help residents recognize the warning signs of impending severe weather.

The "Skywarn" class will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 and cover topics like the basics of thunderstorm development, severe weather safety, how to identify severe weather features and what to report to the National Weather Service. It will be held at Barrow County Emergency Services headquarters, located at 222 Pleasant Hill Church Roach N.E. in Winder.

"This is a great opportunity for citizens to learn more about severe weather and severe weather preparedness," said Penny Clack, Barrow's emergency management coordinator. "The more we all understand severe weather the better we all can be prepared for it."

Skywarn is a national volunteer organization comprised of more than 230,000 trained "severe weather spotters" who provide timely updates to the National Weather Service. Those who attend the class will have the opportunity to become spotters.
