LETTER: Critic has it wrong on ‘Les Miserables’

I could not disagree more with Michael Clark’s review of Les Miserables (“The singing will be hard to resist in gloomy ‘Les Miserables,” Dec. 28, Weekend). He obviously includes himself in the class of people who abhor musicals.

I thought the movie was one of the best I have seen, not just this year, but ever. Gloomy? Of course. Wonderfully sung? Yes. Elaborately staged? Absolutely. It tells an uplifting story and a call to arms against tyranny and oppression.

Perhaps Mr. Clark identifies too closely with the establishment to champion the oppressed?
