Seven home games, including dates with both ACC newcomers, and two nationally televised Thursday night games highlight the 2013 Georgia Tech football schedule, released Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

In what will be Georgia Tech’s 100th season playing home games at Grant Field, the Yellow Jackets will host Pittsburgh and Syracuse, the two newest members of the ACC. Georgia Tech’s other two home ACC games come against Coastal Division rivals North Carolina and Virginia Tech. The Jackets will close the regular season against in-state rival Georgia in the 108th meeting between the two schools.

The Yellow Jackets’ five road games include a return trip to Clemson and games at BYU, Miami, Duke and Virginia. Tech will play at Clemson for the second straight year.

Two Tech games — vs. Virginia Tech (Sept. 26) and at Clemson (Nov. 14) — will be ESPN Thursday night affairs.

Georgia Tech opens the season at home Aug. 31 against Elon from the Southern Conference. The Yellow Jackets have an open date the following Saturday, then begin a stretch of playing four consecutive ACC Coastal Division opponents — at Duke (Sept. 14), vs. North Carolina (Sept. 21), vs. Virginia Tech (Thursday, Sept. 26) and at Miami (Oct. 5) — including three games over a stretch of 13 days. The Jackets’ Thursday night game against Virginia Tech comes just five days after playing North Carolina.

Since 2005, when the ACC initiated a conference championship game, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are the only teams to represent the Coastal Division in the title game.

Following the Virginia Tech game, the Yellow Jackets play back-to-back road games at Miami (Oct. 5), where Tech has not won since 2007, and at BYU (Oct. 12).

After the game at BYU, Tech will play just two road games after Oct. 12, including just one outside of a two and a half-hour drive from Atlanta.

Syracuse visits Georgia Tech for the first time ever Oct. 19 in the first ACC game between the Yellow Jackets and Orange. Tech travels to Virginia Oct. 26 looking for just its second win in Charlottesville since 1990. Pittsburgh comes to Grant Field Nov. 2 for the first time since 1976, when Tony Dorsett was enjoying a Heisman Trophy season for the Panthers.

After Tech’s second open date on Nov. 9, the Yellow Jackets will travel to Clemson for the second straight year, this one coming on a Thursday night (Nov. 14), wrapping up the ACC season.

“There is always a sense of excitement when the schedule is finally released. From a fans’ perspective, our home schedule is a good one, with four ACC opponents and Georgia coming to Atlanta,” head coach Paul Johnson said. “The two Thursday night games give us an opportunity for great exposure against two really good opponents.”

Tech’s final two regular season games come at home against non-conference opponents – Alabama A&M (Nov. 23), which the Jackets will play for the first time, and Georgia (Nov. 30), which will play Georgia Tech for the 108th time.

Because Tech plays two FCS opponents — Elon and Alabama A&M — the Yellow Jackets will need to win a minimum of seven games to become bowl-eligible for the 17th consecutive season.

Game times will be determined later.

The Yellow Jackets begin spring practice March 25. The annual spring game will be held on Friday night, April 19.
