Family Promise of Gwinnett’s SaltLight Center is the first emergency shelter for homeless single women and women with children in Gwinnett County. The center opened on Nov. 14, 2011 and has been able to provide a safe place to stay for over 240 women and children. The center is a night shelter with 11 beds and provides a warm place to sleep, breakfast and dinner, and a hot shower.
The SaltLight Center’s mission is to provide opportunities for the body of Christ to meet the immediate needs of homeless single women and women with children in Gwinnett County. We do this by sharing Christ’s love through hospitality.
Aside from the director, the center is run completely by volunteers. We need four volunteers each night of the week in order to open our doors. We wanted to take the time to highlight one of our key volunteers, Star Farrington. Star is a regular Monday night evening host. She comes in and serves from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
As an evening host she is part of the welcoming committee and she always greets the guests with a huge smile. She loves to encourage the guests while sharing a meal around our large family style table.
Star first heard of the Salt Light Center during a Marriage and Family class trip she took to a church hosting the families in Family Promise program.
She said “it was such an amazing experience to sit down and talk with families while sharing a meal as if we all were a family. I felt that I wanted to serve people as an evening host on a regular basis and was told about the Salt Light Center. I went to volunteer training on a Saturday in May, and I have been serving weekly, sometimes twice a week since then.”
When asked why she continues to volunteer she said, “I love to meet new people and to play with the children. Just being able to allow the families to relax and have a moment where they don’t have to worry about their situations is awesome.”
Thank you Star Farrington for all the hard work and love you put into making the SaltLight Center a huge success.
Volunteers are the heartbeat of the SaltLight Center. They come to the center to shine Christ’s love and kindness on the women and children we serve. We are always in need of volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering you may contact me —Carol Karpf — at email@example.com.
