Buford — BUFORD — The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center is known for its educational exhibits with rare artifacts and displays, but it currently has something new on its property: a local photography exhibit.

Today through March 9, the center hosts its “Shutter Sense and Non-Sense” photography exhibit, which was compiled by a competition between high and middle school students in Gwinnett.

“The GEHC is so excited to partner with Gwinnett County’s art teachers to host this unique exhibit and competition,” said Jason West, director of programming and development. “The photographs are diverse, very interesting to study, and show that these young artists are truly talented.”

The first Shutter Sense exhibition in 2006 was the concept of Ren Hullender and his North Gwinnett National Art Honor Society students. It has grown in the past seven years. This year, there were 485 entries received from 16 public and private high schools in Gwinnett and 74 entries from five middle schools. The categories range from landscapes to animals — anything to do with nature.

Shutter Sense showcases a wide variety of techniques and perspectives that are taking place in Gwinnett County schools as well as to promote growth and sustain art programs in classes.
