LAWRENCEVILLE -- A new Gwinnett County magistrate judge has been selected.

Chief Magistrate Kristina Hammer Blum announced Thursday that Rodney "Keith" Miles, a seasoned attorney, was chosen from among 30 candidates for the full-time position. Miles has been an attorney for 26 years and was most recently the supervising assistant district attorney for the county's major drug unit.

After earning a criminal justice degree from the University of Georgia in 1978, Miles worked in the Georgia Department of Human Resources' youth services division before graduating law school in 1987. Since then, he's served as a judicial law clerk, a solicitor in Gwinnett's juvenile court and a trial division and supervising attorney for the district attorney's office.

In 2012, Miles was named the assistant district attorney of the year by the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia.

"Keith Miles brings an exceptional wealth of legal expertise and experience with him to the Magistrate Court," Blum said.

Miles fills the spot vacated by Blum's appointment as chief magistrate.
