Missing boater ID'd, search continues

CUMMING -- After a weeklong search of Lake Lanier for a missing boater, Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers have scaled back efforts.

The man, identified this weekend as 47-year-old George M. Counts of Tucker, disappeared Monday, Feb. 11, when rangers found his boat along a bank after reports of it circling in the water.

Last week, Forsyth County Fire Department dive teams searched, while rangers used side-scan sonar to find traces of the missing man. Helicopters and a police K-9 assisted in the search.

Over the weekend, the search was scaled back to morning and afternoon surface checks, which are expected to continue this week, said DNR spokeswoman Melissa Cummings. Cummings said the man's family was aware of the search plans.
