Sports stars to take part in school fundraiser

SUGAR HILL -- A local private school wants you to tailgate for a good cause -- and you can meet a star athlete while supporting a school.

Sugar Hill Christian Academy is hosting a Fanatic Fan Fundraiser, giving people the opportunity to show their love for their favorite team while supporting chidren's education.

The event, slated for 7 to 11 p.m. March 2 at the Buford Commuity Center, is described as an adults-only extreme tailgating event. Proceeds from the $75 tickets and silent auction will go toward plans for a third-floor expansion to the school.

"We want to let everyone in Gwinnett know that there's a thriving, private Christian school right in their backyard," said Development Director of Sugar Hill Christian Academy Kurt Witter. "Our Academy has been blessed with growth every year, and we want to spread the word. A fun event like this one is the perfect way to increase awareness and support within our community."

Former Boston Red Sox star Jason Varitek, who still works for the team, will be on hand to autograph sports items, and former Atlanta Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler -- who is a parent of a student at the academy -- will be guest speaker, along with school alumnus Grant Allen.

Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite team's spirit wear during the event, which includes live music from Sweetwater Junction, and a live and silent auction, hosted by Scott Schwartz. Dalton Lee, vice president of finance for the Meredith Local Media Group and a SHCA parent, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Food will include favorite tailgating fare and beverages.

Tickets are not limited SHCA parents.
