Special Photo Members of a local First Lego League team recently visited with residents of Noble Village -- an active senior living community in Gwinnett County.

SUWANEE -- Members of a local First LEGO League team recently visited with residents of Noble Village -- an active senior living community in Gwinnett County.

Children on the team were tasked with a challenge called Senior Solutions, in which they researched and learned about the challenges seniors face with staying independent, engaged and connected.

After completing their research, they had to develop an invention to solve specific, real-world problems. During their visit, children interviewed a number of seniors.

The First LEGO League is a robotics program for 9- to 16-year-olds, which is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills.

According to its website, FLL can be used in a classroom setting but is not solely designed for this purpose. Teams, composed of up to ten children with at least one adult coach, can also be associated with a pre-existing club or organization, homeschooled, or just be a group of friends who wish to do something awesome.

District well represented at music educators conference

SUWANEE -- Gwinnett County Public Schools was well-represented at the 2013 Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference in Savannah.

Participants included:

-- Duncan Creek Elementary School Cardinal Choir: John M. Cypert and Jane A. Roth, Conductors

-- North Gwinnett Middle School Symphonic Band: Mary F. Wilson and Hunter McRae, Conductors

-- North Gwinnett Middle School Guitar Ensemble: Caryn Volk, Conductor

-- Peter Lemonds, Duluth High: Georgia-American String Teachers Association Educator of the Year
