Struck officer recovering from surgery

LAWRENCEVILLE — A school resource officer injured in a wreck outside Lanier High School Wednesday is in serious but stable condition, after undergoing surgery, his wife said Thursday.

Rolando Jimenez suffered internal bleeding, as well as a broken pelvis and knee injury in the accident, as he directed traffic along Buford Highway. His wife Melissa said Jimenez’s jaw had to be set during surgery, and surgeons had to address the internal bleeding.

“First, let us express our appreciation for the thoughts and prayers that have been sent our way following yesterday’s accident,” Melissa Jimenez said in a statement released through Gwinnett County Public Schools, the officer’s employer since 2001.

After describing the injuries, she added, “While we know that he has a long recovery ahead of him, we are thankful that he is alive and look forward to the day when he is able to return home and to the work he loves.”

Police said they plan to charge 22-year-old Sydney Smithgiel of Buford for failing to stop at the officer’s direction, although the charges had not been determined Wednesday.

Next week, Lanier High’s baseball team will host a fundraiser to help the injured school resource officer.

Coach Chad Longe said the proceeds from an annual rivalry charity event with Mountain View’s team will go to Jimenez.

The teams will have their second annual “Stevie B’s Cup” from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Stevie B’s in Buford, with the team that receives the most charitable donations receiving a trophy before Wednesday’s game.

We are all praying for Mr. Jimenez speedy recovery. Both the Lanier HS and Mountain View HS teams are donating their proceeds to Mr. Jimenez. So proud of both of these programs for stepping up in the community!!
