SNELLVILLE -- Thousands of distance runners, joggers and walkers will be descending on Ronald Reagan Parkway on Saturday with their sights set on one thing -- running down Ronald Reagan Parkway.
Run the Reagan is an annual tradition in Gwinnett County, where runners sprint down the road (that is closed for the day) to benefit Gwinnett Community Clinic and Young Life Ministries. Last year, more than 3,000 people participated.
Since it began almost two decades ago, the race has become Gwinnett's largest road race and a qualifier for Atlanta's Peachtree Road Race.
Participants have the choice to run a half-marathon, 10K, 5K or one-mile fun run. Baby strollers and non-competitive wheelchairs are allowed to join the race, but for safety reasons, these participants need to line up after the runners. Parents who are running with their child in a stroller need to sign a release form. Babies don't need to be registered for the race.
Dogs aren't allowed in the race.
All half marathon finishers will receive a commemorative 2013 Run The Reagan medallion. All participants will receive a premium quality T-shirt.
For those who want to use the road during Saturday, it will be opened again at 2 p.m. when the races have ended and crews have had time to clean up.
The race is a rain, shine or fog event. If ice is present, the race may be delayed or cancelled. If you're worried about the weather conditions on Saturday, check the event's website to see if there are any delays.
Registration will be available at 8 a.m. Saturday and cheerleaders are encouraged to line the parkway to root for the runners.
