PREP ROUNDUP: Buford boys hoops clinches state berth

BUFORD -- Buford's boys basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Region 6-AA tournament and secured a spot in the Class AA state tournament with a 62-44 win over Banks County on Tuesday night.

Three Wolves (20-6) scored in double figures, led by a 14-point night from Isaiah Williams. Kyle Doyle followed with 13 points, while A.J. Davis chipped in with 11 points.

Buford will play again in the tournament semis on Friday night against Dawson County at North Hall.


Hebron 60, Lakeview 56

HIAWASEE -- Tyler Skidgel of Hebron scored off an offensive rebound of his own miss with 1.5 seconds left to break a 56-56 tie as the Lions went on to a 60-56 win over Lakeview Academy in the second round of the Region 8-A tournament on Tuesday night at Towns County.

Hebron (12-15) advanced to the tournament semifinals, where it will play at home against the Providence-Pinecrest Academy winner on Friday night.

Skidgel finished with 23 points to lead Hebron, while Cory Johnson chipped in with 12 points.


Mill Creek 3, West Forsyth 0

CUMMING -- Mill Creek's Lauren Tanner put in two goals on Tuesday night in helping the Hawks to a season-opening 3-0 shutout over West Forsyth.

Ellie Bowes provided the third goal for Mill Creek (1-0), while Rachel Allred preserved the shutout at keeper with four saves.

Collins Hill 6, Chattahoochee 1

ALPHARETTA -- Paige Hoover and Desiree Bowen of Collins Hill each scored two goals on Tuesday night as the Eagles opened 2013 with a 6-1 win over Chattahoochee.

Regan Wilhite and Jessica Dacey added one goal each, while Hoover, Wilhite and Kelsey Lawrence each had two assists.

Collins Hill (1-0) also received a strong defensive effort from Amanda Bruemmer, Kaitlyn Del Savio, Kendall Farr and Michaela Routh.

Duluth 4, Wesleyan 2

NORCROSS -- Duluth opened its season on Tuesday night with a 4-2 win over Wesleyan.

Christina Moraitis scored the first goal for Wesleyan (0-1), while junior Maddie Hall scored the second one off an assist from her freshman sister Ellie Hall.

Providence 3, Fellowship 2

ROSWELL -- Providence led 3-0 at the half and held on to post a 3-2 win over Fellowship Christian on Tuesday night in its first game of 2013.

Jesee Manby and Kat Slayton each had a goal and an assist for the Storm (1-0), while Robyn Lowndes scored the third goal with a header off a corner kick.


Collins Hill 3, Chattahoochee 0

ALPHARETTA -- Last season's Class AAAAA state champs Collins Hill launched its 2013 Class AAAAAA campaign with a 3-0 win over Chattahoochee on Tuesday night.

Keeper Jackson Taylor held the Cougars (0-1) scoreless with three saves while Martin Sedarri, Jordan Brust and Paul Ille led the offense with one goal each.

Mill Creek 1, West Forsyth 0

CUMMING -- Mill Creek won its season opener by the narrowest of margins on Tuesday night with a 1-0 decision over West Forsyth.

Chris Schuetz scored the game's lone goal for Mill Creek (1-0) off an assist from Waldyr Pierre-Louis. The shutout was kept intact by keeper Conner Buckley.

Duluth 3, Wesleyan 1

NORCROSS -- Duluth built a 2-0 lead in the first half en route to a 3-1 win over Wesleyan in the first game for both squads on Tuesday night.

Wesleyan (0-1) cut the score to 2-1 in the second half when Cort Coxhead scored off a feed from Benji Johnson.

Fellowship 2, Providence 0

ROSWELL -- Providence started its season on Tuesday night with a 2-0 loss to Fellowship Christian.

Fellowship (1-0) steadily pulled away from Providence (0-1) by scoring one goal in each half.
