Norcross' DeShields named a finalist for Naismith Award

Norcross senior Diamond DeShields is one of three finalists for the Naismith Girls High School Player of the Year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Thursday.

DeShields, a North Carolina signee, joins Duke-bound Rebecca Greenwell (Owensboro Catholic, Owensboro, Ky.) and Tennessee-bound Mercedes Russell (Springfield High School, Springfield, Ore.) as finalists. The candidates were selected by basketball journalists from around the country, who form the Naismith Trophy national high school voting academy. The selections were based on player performances during the 2012-2013 basketball season. The winner will be recognized at the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Naismith Awards Banquet on March 19 in Atlanta.

"With so much talent to consider, the standard for this award reaches new heights every year," said Eric Oberman, Executive Director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. "This year's finalists are a special group, and the judges now face the challenge of determining which of these three will be crowned 2013 Naismith Girls High School Player of the Year."

Collins Hill's Maya Moore, now a WNBA star, is the only other Gwinnett product to win the Naismith girls award. She won it in both 2006 and 2007.
