South Alabama recruited Collins Hill senior Brett Sheehan heavily with a coach who knows the area very well, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Robert Matthews.
Matthews, in addition to playing his prep football at Duluth, coached as a North Gwinnett assistant in 2001-02 and was Shiloh's head coach from 2003-05.
"(Matthews) knows how good the football is here because he coached here," Sheehan said.
South Alabama first offered Sheehan, one of the area's top quarterbacks, in the spring before his senior season. He initially committed to Florida International, where he stayed committed for months until a coaching change led to him looking elsewhere.
That opened the door for South Alabama and Matthews, who gets to work with an all-county quarterback who threw for 2,351 yards, 21 touchdowns and a Gwinnett-best 67.0 completion percentage as a senior.
"I really like Coach Matthews," Sheehan said. "He's a really good guy. He knows a lot about football. He's a good recruiter. You talk to anyone on the team and they tell you how good a guy he is. He has the players over for dinner. He's the kind of coach you want to play for."
