LAWRENCEVILLE -- Gwinnett leaders moved another step closer to the long-awaited widening of Ga. Highway 20 in Sugar Hill Tuesday.

Commissioners signed off on a contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation to take responsibility for the project, which will complete a decade-long effort to widen the entire highway to four lanes through Gwinnett.

The state will bear the expected $33 million costs, although Gwinnett Transportation Director Kim Conroy said the exact price tag will come next month, when the county opens bids from contractors.

The agreement continues a partnership the county entered into several years ago to be in charge of the land acquisition process while the state bore the cost.

Conroy said the process is on track for construction to begin in the spring.
