Snellville fire claims family pet

SNELLVILLE -- A fire that fully engulfed the kitchen of a Snellville home on Monday also claimed the life of a family pet.

Gwinnett firefighters responded to the 3300 block of Southampton Way in Snellville at 3:21 p.m. and had the blaze under control by 4 p.m. Gwinnett Fire Lt. Colin Rhoden said a homeowner arrived to find fire coming out of a door on the right side of the home, and firefighters also dealt with a downed power line and an active gas service. Because the one-level, single-family home was 150 feet from the street, crews had to make up a lot of ground between the fire engine and the house.

Rhoden said a 120-pound hound died in the fire. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators believe the fire began on a stove, but a cause was not yet known, Rhoden said.

"One half of the home was destroyed by the fire and the other half has heavy smoke throughout the home," he said.
