LAWRENCEVILLE -- When Tim Hinds was a freshman in high school, he asked his father for help with a business venture.
So when he booked the gigs, his dad agreed to buy the equipment to begin a recording business.
Over the next four decades, Hinds' music recording interest has lead him to literally master the grooves into record albums for Neil Diamond and other stars, to act as creative director for Gloria Estefan and play a hand in engineering, producing, arranging and mastering 1,500 albums.
After integrating the interest as an extension to his ministry to God, Hinds and his wife Lynn are bringing their passion to the Lawrenceville Square, opening a Moth Music studio, offering recording sessions, music lessons and more.
"We really want to do all the multi-faceted things we do," Hinds said, as he loaded equipment to move to the studio from Annistown Road Baptist Church, where he had continued his interest in recording as he serves as senior pastor.
"We just love to do it," said Lynn, who was the previous propreitor of gift shop Magnolia's and was excited to bring another venture back to the county seat.
The couple will host an open house for the business, located at 166 Crogan Street, at 2 p.m. Saturday.
While lessons are already offered there, Lynn Hinds said a small music gift shop at the front of the studio should soon be complete. Recordings will begin in a month or two, after efforts are made to deaden the sound in the former dance studio and convert the space.
Lynn Hinds said the studio offers both digital recordings and "analog," as vinyl is becoming popular again. The pair will continue to travel to record groups like a recent stint recording Shiloh High School's choir, and they have recently begun auditions for a choral group, they call the Voices of Gwinnett.
"The arts are coming here," Lynn Hinds said of the Square, which also is home to the Aurora Theatre. "This is such a great location."
