BUFORD — The Gwinnett Football League eighth-grade team moved a step closer to repeating as the national champion with a pair of victories in the Football University National Championships.
The GFL group defeated Nashville 28-7 and Southwest Florida 26-0 over the weekend, advancing to the semifinals of the youth football national showcase. It will face Maryland in the semis, with the winner facing the St. Louis-Seattle winner in the championship game. The semis and finals are played in the San Antonio area as part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl festivities, with the championship games held at the Alamodome.
Buford youth coach Ken Burge is the head coach of the GFL eighth-grade team.
The sixth- and seventh-grade GFL teams fell short of the Texas trip. The seventh-graders lost 35-6 to South Florida in the quarterfinals and the sixth-graders fell 14-0 to Georgia in the second round.
The eighth-grade team is currently raising funds for its surprise trip to Texas. Those interested in assisting can donate through the Gwinnett Football League (www.gwinnettfootball.com) or through the Buford Youth Football Association (www.byfa.net).
