BUFORD — Amid the hustle and bustle of shoppers at the Mall of Georgia on Saturday, Felix Tutt of Lawrenceville sat in a comfy chair near the main entrance sipping on a strawberry-banana smoothie.

He had already been at the mall for two hours and estimated he’d be there for another three while his wife Tanesha shopped for gifts for her parents and their nieces and nephews.

“She has to take time and pick out the right gift,” Tutt said, adding he had his shopping taken care of already.

Tutt was in the minority Saturday as crowds packed the mall for last-minute holiday shopping.

Matt and Samantha Vann of Sugar Hill had just arrived at the mall and were waiting in line at the Build-A-Bear Workshop where their son Liam, 2, was going to make a bear for his infant brother, Clay.

“It took us about 30 minutes in the parking lot,” Samantha Vann said, “but so far, so good.”

“It’s just as crazy as we thought it would be,” Matt Vann added.

Ryan Bennett of Cartersville said the mall was “kind of hectic.” He picked out an Apple Magic Trackpad for himself.

“There’s a lot of people out today,” he laughed.

Lawrenceville resident Kiana Carmichael was finished with last-minute shopping for her dad and grandfather and was headed out the doors about 5:45 p.m. with her family Cecilia Carmichael of Lawrenceville and Sheila Carmichael of Greensboro, N.C. While she found the mall busy, she was especially surprised by the food court.

“It’s really hard to find a place to eat,” she said.

“I did expect a lot of people and I did expect a little chaotic, but (it’s) not so bad,” Sheila Carmichael said. “Keeps you in the spirit.”
