LAWRENCEVILLE — A woman on her way to work was struck and killed crossing a Lawrenceville street early Thursday morning.
Sheila Smith, 58, of Lawrenceville, was killed while crossing Ga. Highway 120 in front of QuikTrip at about 5:30 a.m. Police believe she was crossing the street on her way to work at Gwinnett Medical Center.
According to Lawrenceville Police Sgt. Chris Ralston, Smith was struck by a blue Hyundai Elantra driven by Barry Carter, 25, of Lawrenceville. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision, which left Pike Street closed for nearly three hours.
“At this point, I don’t expect any charges, but we are still in the investigation,” Ralston said.
Smith, who died at the scene, is the second pedestrian to be killed this week in Gwinnett.
A man believed to be homeless was killed before sunrise Tuesday, as he crossed Interstate 85 near Buford Drive.
Another early morning accident Monday on Ronald Reagan Parkway killed a driver in a five-car collision.
