SUWANEE — Officials hope a lane extension will be a treat for Suwanee commuters.
The Georgia Department of Transportation completed a quick response project on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road that could help people getting on the interstate get out of the way of the through-traffic.
“A quick response project eliminated an old ‘U-turn’ median opening allowing the extension of the left turn lane from SR 317/Lawrenceville Suwanee Road to Interstate 85 north. This change allows traffic headed to I-85 north to get left so traffic going straight can continue without delay,” Georgia DOT district engineer Bayne Smith said. “This lane extension opened for us Monday and we’ve seen improvement in the corridor already.”
The DOT’s quick response program allows low cost, operational improvements to be made to the state route system. This improvement cost $70,215.
“Small changes can make a big change in your commute,” Smith said. “The quick response program is a tool specifically for work costing less than $200,000. As we work to improve the state route system in Northeast Georgia please share your ideas with us by using our website, www.dot.ga.gov.”
