By next spring, there will be another reason to visit a park in Suwanee.
A disc golf course is under construction at Suwanee Creek Park, and city officials plan for it to be open in the next several months. Jessica Roth, assistant to the city manager, said disc golf was a suggestion that residents had on a park enhancements survey conducted in 2010.
“It fits with the passive nature of Suwanee Creek Park, yet offers another reason for folks to come use the park,” she said in a news release.
The largely wooded course will have 18 holes, and is the fourth disc golf course in Gwinnett. It will be located near the Buckeye Pavilion at the top of the Suwanee Creek trailhead.
“Trees and other objects will be used to make it challenging,” Roth said. “We’re working around the natural environment as much as possible.”
Arbor Creek Landscape Contractors of Fayetteville is working on clearing some trees from the area, but is expected to be finished by the end of the month.
A group of disc golfers, who range in skill level from beginner to professional, will test-play the course before final arrangements are made, such as tee boxes, signs and baskets.
City officials have partnered with the Gwinnett Disc Golf Organization, a volunteer organization that assists with maintenance and tournaments at other Gwinnett County disc courses, to likely host a grand opening tournament early next year.
