Snellville man arrested after driving away from court

Just minutes after leaving a courtroom answering a summons for driving without a valid license, a Snellville man got into his vehicle and drove away.

A police officer was right behind.

A Snellville Police Department court officer reported to another officer he saw the suspect enter the driver’s side of his 2005 Nissan Pathfinder despite having just left court.

After confirming the driver had no license during a traffic stop, the man was placed under arrest.

“A strong odor of marijuana was evident on (the suspect) and he was asked where the substance was located,” said Brian Arrington, public information officer for the Snellville Police Department. “(The suspect) told police it was in a black bag on the passenger’s seat. Inside the bag was 1.25 ounces of marijuana, a Tupperware cup with residue and a digital weight scale.”

In addition to a charge of driving without a valid license, Mauricio Contreras Rodriguez, 20, was arrested and charged with felony possession of marijuana — greater than 1 ounce and possession of drug-related objects.

Rodriguez was transported to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.
