Gwinnett Daily Post
With a pair of Gwinnett teams vying for the Class AAAAAA state football championship this weekend, the rivalry is getting political.
Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson and Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette have a friendly wager on the Norcross-North Gwinnett game, which will determine the state champion on Saturday at the Georgia Dome.
Burnette, who played quarterback for the Bulldogs in his youth, challenged Johnson to put Suwanee’s new logo license plate on the front of his vehicle if North comes out on top. Through the end of the school year, Burnette agreed to bear Norcross’s “A Place to Imagine” license plate on the front of his vehicle if the Blue Devils, who are the defending state champs, pull out the win.
“We’re excited that a Gwinnett County team will be the 6-A state football champs,” Burnette said in a press release, “but we’ll really be celebrating when it turns out to be the North Gwinnett Bulldogs.”
Johnson has confidence — and pride — in the western Gwinnett team.
“We’re imagining the Blue Devils bringing home another state championship trophy to Norcross,” he said, playing off the city logo.
A third Gwinnett team, the Buford Wolves, will play in the AAA championship game Friday.
