The Georgia Gwinnett College men’s soccer team’s won the Association of Independent Institutions championship this fall in its first season of eligibility, netting a big reward this week for head coach Steve DeCou.
DeCou was named the AII Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year after a successful season that also included the Grizzlies’ first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance after the team defeated No. 3-ranked Ashford (Iowa) to claim the AII tourney title. GGC hosted the AII tourney in its first year of postseason eligibility.
The team finished the year with a 15-5 record, posting eight shutouts and allowing less than one goal per game.
The Grizzlies are 30-7-1 over two seasons under DeCou, the program’s first head coach.
DeCou has now won coach of the year honors four times over his career with four different conferences. He earned his 150th career victory in the Grizzlies’ AII semifinal win over Cal State San Marcos Nov. 15. His career record is now 151-99-16 over 14 years.
