2 GCPS schools finalists for state STEM awards

Two Gwinnett County schools have been named as finalists for statewide STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics education — awards.

The Technology Association of Georgia announced Friday that Benefield Elementary (“Best STEM Day Activity”) and the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology (“Classroom Technology”) were honored in separate categories. Winners will be announced Sept. 27 in Savannah.

“We are honored to learn that TAG continues to notice the fine work of our teachers and students,” GSMST Principal Dr. Jeff Matthews said. “This award has a special significance for our school as GSMST students had the opportunity to learn together hands-on with another GCPS school.”

GSMST was recognized for the work its ninth-grade students did during an instructional activity with fourth-graders from Benefield Elementary. Benefield was honored in its own category for the same program.

“It is exciting to have our students connect learning with real-life applications and open the door to future STEM career opportunities,” Benefield Principal Dr. Melissa Walker said. “We look forward to growing our STEM partnership with GSMST.”

Finalists were chosen from more than 170 applicants in eight different categories.
