Stories We Tell DVD (PG-13)
Movie: 3 and 1/2 out of 4 stars
Disc: 2 and 1/2 out of 4 stars
The best documentary of 2013 thus far and easily one of the most original in the history of the genre, “Stories We Tell” is the creation of Canadian actress-turned-writer/director Sarah Polley that practically defies categorization. Playing out like a mind-bending mystery thriller, the film finds Polley interviewing her (often uncomfortable) siblings and her father Michael (who also narrates). The crown of the many jewels in the production is newly-created live action footage that was distressed in post-production in order to look like home movies that features actress Rebecca Jenkins as Polley’s deceased mother Diane. The plot? Rest assured the less you know about “Stories We Tell” going in the more satisfying your viewing experience will be.
