LAWRENCEVILLE — The two victims pulled from their burning Lawrenceville home last week have died from their injuries, officials said.
At about 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 22, Gwinnett County firefighters responded to the home at 278 Lester Road after a passerby reported seeing flames and smoke. Two residents — identified Wednesday as 83-year-old Virginia McMurray and 56-year-old Steven Hurd — were unresponsive when emergency personnel pulled them from the burning single-story home.
McMurray and Hurd have now passed away, fire department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
“Both succumbed to their injuries over the weekend at Grady Hospital in Atlanta,” Rutledge said. “According to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner, the cause of death appears to be consistent with smoke inhalation.”
The victims were both found in the living room of the home, extricated and originally sent to Gwinnett Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The fire destroyed a carport and extended to the attic of the home. “Significant” smoke was scene throughout the structure, Rutledge said.
“Fire investigators have determined that the fire erupted from the carport,” Rutledge said, “however the exact cause is still undetermined and under investigation.”
