New sidewalks coming to Suwanee

SUWANEE — New sidewalks are coming to areas along Buford Highway in Suwanee.

The Suwanee City Council on Tuesday at its regularly scheduled meeting approved a contract with the Astra Group, a Woodstock-based company, to build sidewalks on the south side of Buford Highway between George Pierce Park and Dollar Circle, and from the Park Pointe subdivision to the Ruby Forest subdivision. The city’s contract with the Astra Group is for $349,888.

The Council also adopted a millage rate of 4.93, the same rate it was last year.

City Planning Director Josh Campbell said the sidewalk work should begin in a couple weeks and be finished in about 90 days, weather permitting.

Campbell said the sidewalks were identified in the Pedestrian Bicycle Plan as a priority project because of proximity to parks and schools, and citizen input. The city previously filled in sidewalk gaps along Peachtree Industrial Blvd., and has a similar project along the Brushy Creek Greenway.

Also at the meeting, the Council approved a street paving contract with Allied Paving Contractors to resurface about 1.57 miles for $322,958.71. The Pendergrass-based company paved about three miles of Suwanee’s roads last year.

The Council also approved an updated list of streets and highways where police may use speed detection devices. It authorized an agreement with the Partnership Gwinnett public funding entity, the 501(c)6, which was created last year.

The Council also authorized the mayor to enter into a project framework agreement about the Buford Highway improvement project with the Georgia Department of Transportation.

And the Council approved two staffing changes at the police department. The communications officer position was moved from part-time to full-time, and the department added an administrative secretary position. Both positions could be funded without any changes to the fiscal year 2014 budget.
