3160 Main St., Suite 200, Duluth
Open since: Aug. 1, 2012
Owners: Husband-wife duo Keith Shewbert and Jeanette Osowski
Location: 45 on Main is located in downtown Duluth on Main Street, across from the Town Green. It is in the same location where Chocolate Perks was once situated.
Hours: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, closed Sundays
Atmosphere: Last year, when owners Keith Shewbert and Jeanette Osowski heard Chocolate Perks was up for sale, they wanted to take a chance on the location.
“I feel very strongly that you need places like this in every downtown,” Shewbert said. “If I had the money, I would open one in every city in Gwinnett. Cafe shops and places like that are gathering places.”
The two decorated the inside with pops of greens, oranges and blues with two love seats covered in pillows. For those who need to get some work completed, there are several tables scattered throughout.
“We wanted it to be welcoming and comfortable for everybody for no matter who walks in,” Shewbert said. “I want it to be a place where they want to spend their time.”
Beside the local art on the walls, there is a communal bookcase.
“We have a library,” Shewbert said. “What we do is the people donate the books, we sell them and all the money goes to a local foundation to help the local schools.”
At this location, the funds raised benefits the Duluth cluster foundation.
There is additional patio space outside with lime green umbrellas.
Every Friday and Saturday night, there is live music. On every third Wednesday of the month, 45 on Main hosts wine tastings, which are purchased from small wineries around the country.
Menu: The food menu is small, but fresh.
“We make everything in-house that we can,” Marketing Director Michelle Nguyen-Foust said. “That includes the hummus, pimento cheese, the dressings. We support local product as possible.”
45 on Main offers pastries, breakfast plates, salads, sandwiches and sides. The food is available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. At night, there is a dessert menu for those with a sweet tooth.
There are specialty coffees and a variety of teas for sale.
Some of the local companies that are used at the cafe are the San Francisco Roasting Coffee Co. in the Virginia Highlands, Arden’s Garden juices and Atlanta-based Honeysuckle Gelato.
“They take traditional Southern flavors and infuse into gelato,” Nguyen-Foust said.
Honeysuckle offers a vary, like salted caramel, maple bacon and banana pudding.
Things you might not know: Shewbert and Osowski also own 45 South in Norcross, which is another cafe.
