A community is mourning the loss of a Gwinnett County Public Schools administrator who died over the weekend.

Jennifer Niday, an assistant principal at McKendree Elementary School in Lawrenceville, died when she fell down a flight of stairs, hitting her head. The incident happened in Athens.

Niday, a 36-year-old mother of two, has been an assistant principal at the school for five years and an educator in the county for 13.

In a letter sent home to parents on Monday, principal Loretta Denmark had nothing but kind words to say about Niday.

"Her smile, energy, and love for our students and school will always be remembered and she will be greatly missed," Denmark said.

She continued to say: "Words cannot express the sadness we feel today as we have lost a leader, a friend, and an advocate for children."

Gibson Lowry, an assistant principal at Mill Creek High School, tweeted "Our thoughts & prayers go out to our friends at McKendree Elementary (Collins Hill) in the loss of AP Ms. Jennifer Niday over the weekend."

McKendree is located within the Collins Hill High School cluster.

Grief counselors will be at the school this week to talk with the students and staff.

No other details were available on Monday night.
